What Happens to Deleted Photos
When you delete photo files (or any files)
on a PC or memory card, the data itself is not erased.
All that happens is that the entry in the disk or card's index of where the data for those files is located gets
removed from the index. Effectively it doesn't know about the deleted photos any more.
Additionally, because it now doesn't know about them, the area of disk space where the data for those files is
still stored (remember, the data did not get erased yet) is now marked as free space and so is available to the
system for any new files to be written there instead.
If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover photos or any other deleted files
involved.
So, to recover photos with the greatest chance of success,
don't panic
just don't do anything that might cause new files and data
to be written to the device that you deleted photos from,

How to Recover Photos on a PC
If the deleted photos have been deleted from a PC hard drive, then you
need to be extremely careful what you do next to recover them with the most chance of success. That computer must
be used as little as possible to minimise disk activity.
If you are reading this page on the same computer on which you need to recover photos, do not turn the computer
off, but also do nothing further on it. For example, do not use it to browse the internet as this causes lots of
temporary files to be written to the disk.
The most significant rule is that any disk activity reduces the likelihood that you will be able to recover photos
using any photo recovery software.
So, DO NOT open new applications or programs as this will also cause disk activity making it more difficult to
recover deleted photos as a result.
Also DO NOT close any applications or programs as this may cause files to be updated and saved to the disk.
Programs that are running and saving data to the disk should be stopped if possible, preferably still without
actually closing them.
Do NOT shut down, close or reboot your PC. Firstly, you'll need the PC to be switched on to recover the deleted
photos. Secondly the process of turning it off and then on again will likely cause applications or Windows itself
to save data and create new files. This will potentially overwrite the deleted files data and make it impossible to
recover photos successfully.

Recovering Deleted Photos from a Camera,
Cell Phone, Memory Card or USB Device
As well as PC and laptop disk drives, digital photos can be stored on
other forms of electronic media such as memory cards, USB memory sticks, dedicated memory and micro drives.
Typically, digital cameras and many cell phones for example, store photos and image data on memory card devices
such as SD, MiniSD, XD, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Sony Memory Stick, and MMC memory cards. Some models also store
some pictures on built-in dedicated memory.
Similarly USB memory sticks can be used as backup or transfer digital images from one device to another.
